I am researching for a paper for english, my topic is ending hunger in America, and your website really helped enlighten me! You cover topics that are generally read over, and that gives helpful support. I give youg reat credit, because nowadays most of the solutions to hunger have been said already, so great job coming up with a new one that helps! you know your stuff, and sound like you're out to educate, rather than confront and say your idea is the best. under all the negative remarks, there is a realization that hunger has gone unsolved too long, so the remarks must be a coping mechanism for the epiphany [:

I live in the Midwest, Des Moines, Iowa. Here, a single person can get full amount of food stamps, 171.00$ That is for one month, for anything you eat.

one loaf of bread: 3.50
one-half gallon milk: 2.30 2.30 * 20 days = 46.00 46.00
two tall boxes of cereal: free at a food bank, for those w/children under 5 and seniors
three cans of fruit: free at a food bank, for those w/children under 5 and seniors
two 18 ounce jars of peanut butter: free at a food bank, for those w/children under 5 and seniors
one block of cheese spread: free at a food bank, for those w/children under 5 and seniors
one fryer chicken or equal amount of vension: free at a local church
1 pound of ground beef: 3.00, avg 3.00 * 12 days = 36.00 82.00
one 16 ounce of vegetables: 3.50 3.50 * 12 = 42.00 124.00
one banana: .35 cents, avg
ketchup: forget it, you can't afford it .35 * 30 = 10.50 134.50
salad dressing: forget it, you can't afford it
musturd:forget it, you can't afford it
Lettuce: forget it, you can't afford it
one pound of dry beans: 2.99 2.99 * 3 = 8.97 143.47
one pound of pasta, cheap kind: 1.39 1.39 * 5 = 6.95 150.92
one can frozen juice: 2.99
one frozen pot pie: 1.00 1.00 * 16 (8 days) = 16.00 166.92
one 16 ounce coffee: 2.50-5.00 and up
16 ounce creamer: 2.50-4.00
5 pounds sugar: 4.00 171.00 - 166.92 = 4.08 to have fun with for the month

I am not a senior, over 65, nor feeding children under 5, routinely. I have been known to buy tea, coffee, sugar and the occasional margarine, potato and even a cut of meat other than ground beef.

I have always been a frugal shopper. So, it came as a huge surprise, when food stamps lasted a little over two weeks this past month and the month before. Most of my money, (I have a parttime job making minimum wage) pays for my efficiency apartment, which is less than some of my neighbors, because I moved in with a friend, then, later, he moved out, so I have an old lease - THAT AND my manager knows I have only myself to rely upon.

I'm hungry quite a lot of the time. I have discovered over this past year of rising food costs, that if a person goes with too many missed meals, the stomach demands more food, more often.

A friend doesn't like peanut butter and gives me some of his cheese. Otherwise, there would be many, many days, when I had no food, except milk and cereal with coffee or tea.

I cannot stand President Bush and have spoken out about him loudly in my blog. Never before in my lifetime has there been so little for a poor person to afford to eat. George McGovern, too, winner of a big prize and going to Mexico to retrieve it...he makes me ill. There is no problem in America about yield. Iowa has the one of the biggest yields on its crops each and every year. My neighbors.

It's money. That is the trouble. Why does it cost almost three dollars to buy one pound of dry beans? Why? Discover this answer and the answer to why most of these foods are so costly, and our food problems will be over.

Thank you for this site.

Hi, I know that this is not "the forum for this" (those TV news guy's words keep beating in my memory) but I would like to know if you have an YT channel?. I do and I would like to add u to my fav's there to help spreading the news about your company.
About this nasty episode: do u have any way to identify that tv show and do some boycot?. Do those guys "own" the sidewalk?. Keep spreading about this vid, but, perhaps u could've also videotaped the car plate.
One last thing, is there any way to enlarge the grey font in the comments?. It's hard for me to read it. Thanx very much for your reply and for what you do (I'm from South America and English is not my first language).

I agree about hunger being a big and complex problem ... but the good news is, we know what the solutions are. Yes, they are big undertakings; yes, it may take decades to get there; but yes, there are dedicated people that are working every day to educate, advocate, and most of all find food for the hungry right here in our communities. Thank you for helping keep a high profile on the issue of hunger in America.

Just another note on hunger and the decline of western civilization. A 93 year old guy from Minnesota, Norman Borlaug, is widely credited, in the fast-lane life-on-the-razor's-edge world of agronomy, with saving the lives of one billion human beings worldwide. He has won the Nobel Prize, The Presidential Medal of Freedom and, last week, The Congressional Gold Medal, but has never been on reality TV or in G.Q. He has no blog. Ever heard of him? I hadn't either until I read a brief column in Newsweek. In the 40's old Norm developed hybrid wheat strains called "dwarf wheat" and created planting techniques that have been successfully applied in Central and South America, India and China. This guy really has saved the lives of over a billion people.

His continuing obscurity (compared to, say, Paris Hilton or David Hasselhoff) is bizarrely sad. Saving one-seventh of humanity just doesn't cut it, I guess.

Just another note on hunger and the decline of western civilization. A 93 year old guy from Minnesota, Norman Borlaug, is widely credited, in the fast-lane life-on-the-razor’s-edge world of agronomy, with saving the lives of one billion human beings worldwide. He has won the Nobel Prize, The Presidential Medal of Freedom and, last week, The Congressional Gold Medal, but has never been on reality TV or in G.Q. He has no blog. Ever heard of him? I hadn’t either until I read a brief column in Newsweek. In the 40’s old Norm developed hybrid wheat strains called “dwarf wheat” and created planting techniques that have been successfully applied in Central and South America, India and China. This guy really has saved the lives of over a billion people.

I saw the video of you getting harassed by the news guys, the best thing they could have done was a short interview with your mascot. Come on, people flipping through the channels and see a big orange guy in the background they are going to stop and see it.

I'm gonna buy some of your buttons and give em out to people. It's a good cause and you guys are a-ok in my book.

Wow, how strange... people here are doing something to help the hungry, and for some reason there are a bunch of trolls who feel the need to attack them? For what? For not doing enough, or for not ending hunger, or for focusing on hunger in the US? That is really pathetic.

Here's how it works. These guys did something (dressed up as a mascot and went to an iPhone line and ended up in a video that was picked up by Boing Boing) that got this Web site some hits. One of those hits was mine. I read the material, thought about it, and sent $100 to America's Second Harvest.

Now, because of Hungrr, America's Second Harvest has $100 that they would not have otherwise had. What's wrong with that? Not sure I see the problem...

Keep up the good work!

Your video ended up at www.canoë.ca in a french blog.
The journalist who posted the article was mostly in favour of the news crew (of course!).
I was not.
I think your cause is worthy, noble, and much more important than yet another coverage of a waiting line in front of an electronic goods store selling the latest hype gadget.
Hunger is a much more pressing need then getting an i-phone, I think...
But... er... Everybody on the blog agrees on one thing, though: the mascot IS ugly... Sorry!

I also saw your video on youtube and ordered a button to contribute to your cause. Too bad the American media is so concerned with showing off $600 gadgets and promoting spending, but won't even so much as let a charity representative be present in the background of their shot.

Hi, I love this site and everything that it's doing. I recently saw a video of the Hungrr Mascot being harassed in NYC at one of the iPhone lines by a news agency setting up their shot.

Just look at all the support for Hungrr here:
http://www.spikedhumor.com/articles/113507/Charity_Mascot_Harassed.html?rh=173711

All the people there [on that site] agree that the news agency had no right, and the police had no right, to harass him. Please do something about it; do not stand idly by and take a stand (it's great for publicity as well). Read some of the comments on the aforementioned website and just look at the amount of positive (+) votes the comments received. You have my support all the way, as well as that of many on that website. :)

I propose changing the name of the food stamp program to the delinquent fine reimbursement office or auto insurance reimbursement office. I pushed for a food stamp survey (thru the Montana DPHHS), poorly done in Billings, MT, that indicated 18 of 96 food stamp applicants listed DUI issues, fines, or auto insurance as a reason for needing food stamps (that equals over 70,000 over the last 20 years in Montana would have listed those reasons).

It stands to reason, that an indigent, having to immediately pay 500$ for a late fine or auto insurance, would have a problem buying his own food, and would probably have to go to the food stamp (fine reimbursement office) to get something to eat. I estimate the food stamp program could save 100 million dollars per year if the states would change their laws (require community service for late fines, get low cost auto insurance for indigentls).

So many people never understand performance art. Oh well, so many people do. If you guys are paying taxes, helping at homeless shelters, getting things done, donating money and raising awareness in a fun way more power to ya! Someday I hope that people will see the way to end poverty is by themselves taking action to help those less fortunate and rally against their governments for things like a lot of the ideals and proposals by Bucky Fuller. Hunger is a serious issue and so many times laughter is the best medicine or at least instigator to getting things done.

I haven't looked too much into to what you're doing, but from what I've seen, I approve. So few people are aware of the poverty many Americans face, but you're bringing it into awareness. It seems as though you cover the bases that are typically neglected, such as advocacy and sustainability. I'm also glad to see that you not only press on despite criticism, but also reply to that criticism reasonably and without confrontation. You're doing a great thing here, and doing it well. I wish you the best.
